Braintree Electric Light Department was awarded American Public Power Association’s Energy Innovator Award at APPA’s national conference in New Orleans.
This award recognizes utility programs or projects that demonstrate advances in the development or application of creative, energy efficient techniques or technologies; provide better service to electric customers; or increase the efficiency of utility operations or resources. Judging criteria also includes transferability and takes into account project scope in relation to utility size.
BELD was recognized for launching one of public power’s first electric vehicle marketing programs. The Braintree Drives Electric program leverages social media marketing and grassroots tactics to encourage use of electric vehicles. Since the start of the program, the number of electric vehicle owners in town has increased from 10 to 55. Braintree boasts the highest electric vehicle per capita adoption rate among area municipalities with similar demographics (adoption rates are similar to those in significantly more affluent areas). In addition, Braintree’s “Bring Your Own Charger” program provides incentives to customers who charge during off-peak hours, mitigating the impact on peak load.
We are honored to have received this award!
