Satellite-based communication is affected by sun interference which is caused by the sun passing directly behind a geostationary satellite as seen from a receiving earth station. Depending on the receive antenna size, its efficiency and the frequency band used, this interference can cause degradation in quality of service or a complete service outage.

Suns path during equinox season

For several minutes each day for several days during the equinox season (February/March and September/October), the sun passes through the equatorial plane which is used by geostationary satellites. At these times, the apparent path of the sun across the sky takes it directly behind the satellite making it appear in the beam width of a receive earth station’s line of-sight.

Boston spring sun outages

The heat emitted by the sun is an intense source of thermal noise radiated at the same frequency range communication satellites use: radio frequencies (RF), and the receive antenna noise temperature rises significantly. A sun outage occurs because the earth station cannot distinguish between the energy from the sun and its intended communication signal. This can be expressed as a reduced Carrier-to-Interference (C/I) ratio, a degraded Carrier-to-Noise (C/N) ratio or as an increased antenna noise temperature (and thus reduced receive antenna G/T) as the Interference (Noise) increases during the sun transit.

For the receive earth station, this once-a-day natural phenomenon of additional solar thermal noise is noticed as a source of interference, which causes signal degradation (interference causing lower link availability) or even daily outages (total signal loss) for small periods of time.

The timing and duration of the interference, as well as level of service degradation, varies based on the receive earth station location, its size and operational frequency. For earth stations located in the northern hemisphere, this interference occurs for several days just prior to the spring equinox and just after the autumnal equinox (exactly reversed for the southern hemisphere). In general, sun interference occurs during the morning hours for earth stations situated at longitudes west of the sub-satellite point, while they occur during the afternoon for those earth stations that are located east of the satellite’s orbital location.

renewable energyDue to the increasing requirements of adding new renewable energy resources to the BELD power supply mix, it’s necessary for us to increase our Energy Charge March 1 by $0.0025/kWh, raising the rate from $.06891 cents/kWh to $.07141 cents/kWh. The increasing renewable energy requirements mandated by the State of Massachusetts will require BELD to reevaluate our rates more frequently in the future. This increase will adjust our electric rate by approximately 1.8%, adding approximately $1.75/month to the average residential customer bill (700 kWh).  As always, we will continue to work hard to find new ways to reduce costs and keep your electric rates affordable.

We received reports of malicious email spoofing—specifically, emails w/holiday greetings carrying malware appearing to come from electric utilities. Do not click on links or open attachments—they are NOT from us. Have a safe and happy holiday.

SCAM ALERT: Some of our customers have recently received calls from a local number offering them 25% discounts off of their electric bill if they had paid their bill on time for the past 3 months.

These calls are not from BELD, please do not give them any personal information.

As you know,  the Walt Disney company has been sunsetting the standalone Disney Channel,  Disney XD, and Disney Junior apps across all their platforms and replacing them with the new DisneyNOW app.  They are now in the process of sunsetting the final three standalone apps (Disney Channel, XD and Junior) on all devices.

If you are trying to access Disney Channel, Disney XD, or Disney Junior you will be redirected to get the DisneyNOW app on your device.

  • September 13 – They will begin messaging (in the three apps) to users that as of September 27 their content will be available in the DisneyNOW app

Several customers have reported receiving several scam phishing "BELD" emails today asking to verify their accounts. These are scam emails and we have taken steps to block them from sending more. If you receive one, please disregard and delete.

As of August 1, our CallerID on TV is being phased out. Unfortunately the technology has changed and the software will no longer be supported so we are unable to carry that service that we have provided free to our cable subscribers.

Some customers have reported another scam about their email account "de-activation". These emails are NOT from BELD, if you received please delete and delete from your trash folder.

A customer received a scam call from a local number.
Scammer was looking for the owner of the property to get them lower rates for electricity. We are the only electric company in town and our electric rates are already lower than all surrounding towns rates. These calls should be ignored with no information given. 

Luckily this customer didn’t give them any information and notified us right away to get notice to rest of the town. Please do not supply these types of calls with ANY information about you, your address or your services.

Dear valued customer,

Due to congestion in our mail server, all unverified accounts will be deactivated, verify your account now.

This is NOT from BELD, this is a scam, DO NOT click the link, please delete it and remove it from your trash folder. We have taken steps to block these, but you may have already received it.
