We will be performing emergency fiber-optic repairs this week at 501 Commerce Dr. starting at about 11 p.m. and lasting until Friday early A.M. during this time BELD customers will lose access to the Internet and their BELD phone services. We try to schedule any maintenance at the best time for all.

We apologize for any inconvenience

Sat, 03/20/2021 - 17:30

This past week, Braintree Public Schools (BPS) technology services experienced a Denial of Service (DoS) attack, which limited access to Internet service for the students, faculty, and staff. Because BELD Internet provides Internet services to all Braintree schools, the attack went through the BELD network, causing more Internet traffic than our network typically sees. This caused a huge “Internet” traffic jam, intermittently slowing down our Internet/phone services for some of our customers over the past few days.

These types of attacks do not generally lead to any breach of privacy or data, but they can be very problematic for everyone affected. BELD Internet, in partnership with Braintree Public Schools, has made efforts to mitigate the attack, and we are continuing to respond accordingly. Due to the serious implications of the incident, BPS has alerted local and federal agencies and will partner as needed to engage their support in responding to the attack and to those involved.

Intermittent Internet update

In the week to come, additional network disruptions may occur if the attacks continue.  BELD IT and the BPS Tech Services will continue to monitor all network activity.

Thank you for your understanding and patience through this situation.  The schools, town and BELD value our partnership with each other and our ability to work together for the community.

When calling international, after you’ve dialed the full telephone number, an automated voice states “ You must enter (3-digits) (supplied by automated voice) to complete call. This new feature eliminates outgoing hacked, robo, calls.

This is a change that was put in place as an additional safe guard.  We have enabled this captcha to help prevent customer accounts from being attacked and incurring thousands of dollars’ worth of fraudulent activity.

There is another security feature for international calls, whereas, if you exceed BELD’s default International dialing threshold of five (5) call attempts in a 5-minute period. BELD disables international dialing to prevent further potential fraudulent activity.

Our crews work around the clock in difficult conditions to restore your power as quickly as possible when winter storms cause outages. We hope these tips help you better manage while we work to get your lights back on.

• If someone in your household relies on electric life support equipment, we strongly recommend emergency back-up power such as a permanent standby or portable gas-powered generator. Consult your medical equipment suppliers about your backup power requirements.

Make sure cell phones and all electronic devices (including power banks) are fully charged … In a
pinch, car chargers come in handy as you can charge your devices from your vehicle.

• Avoid candles, or anything with an open flame, and have flashlights with fresh batteries handy. Stock up on canned or dried food and fresh water.

Prepare for Winter• Unplug sensitive appliances such as TVs, computers, game consoles and microwaves. Temporary power surges can damage microprocessors inside them. And always use surge protectors!

• If you lose power, be sure it’s not due to a blown fuse or tripped circuit breaker by checking to see if your neighbors have power. If not, always call us at 781.348.BELD (2353) to report any outages

Due to higher usage, you may see an increase in your electric bill.

As expected, with everyone streaming, video chatting, gaming and working from home these days, we've seen a spike in Internet and electrical usage. Along with the extremely warmer then normal temperatures and air conditioners running longer then normal, some residents usages have increased. Meaning most will see increases in their electric bills.

We have had some recent questions regarding solar installations and current ”special  offers" residents are seeing.

If you get calls, see advertisements online, in the mail or at a table stand somewhere regarding the installation of solar on your property/roof, please don’t deal with those people. Most of/if not all of those “special offers” are not offered in Municipal Light Plant territories, such as Braintree. Besides the fact, there are many companies just trying to make a profit and the results may not be what you expect.

If you are considering solar and have ANY questions you should contact BELD and we will help you through the process from start to finish. Please do not take the word of the solar installers / salespeople—contact our Energy Advisor at 781.348.1032 or energyadvisor@beld.com.

BELD AlertsWe have discovered an issue with Motorola MG & MB series cable modem/router units. The MG/MB series of Motorola modem/routers are currently not working reliably with our system, customers should not purchase these units until we have a resolution in place.

We are also requiring any customer who is purchasing their own modem to purchase a DOCSIS 3.1 modem or a DOCSIS 3.1 modem/router combo unit. if you currently have a 3.0 modem and you are not having any problems with it, you do not need to replace that. We are only requiring customers who are purchasing new modems to buy a 3.1.

DOCSIS 3.1 is a technology that can provide speeds up to 10 Gbps. Such gigabit level speeds were previously possible only using fiber optic cables. But by implementing it, BELD can provide blazing speeds even over coaxial cables.

YouTube viewers are set to see a big drop in video quality worldwide in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This does not mean the YouTube TV service, just the regular free Youtube video service.

YouTube will reduce the quality of all videos to standard definition as a way to alleviate internet congestion due to more people having to shelter in place and using the service.

YouTube says that users will still be able to switch videos to HD and other high-quality options, but standard definition will be set to the default no matter how much bandwidth you have. The site will be implementing the streaming quality measures over the next few days.

renewable energyDue to the increasing requirements of adding new renewable energy resources to the BELD power supply mix, it’s necessary for us to increase our Energy Charge March 1 by $0.0025/kWh, raising the rate from $.06891 cents/kWh to $.07141 cents/kWh. The increasing renewable energy requirements mandated by the State of Massachusetts will require BELD to reevaluate our rates more frequently in the future. This increase will adjust our electric rate by approximately 1.8%, adding approximately $1.75/month to the average residential customer bill (700 kWh).  As always, we will continue to work hard to find new ways to reduce costs and keep your electric rates affordable.
